Major Donor Cultivation - What Should
it Look Like? |
 |
By Dan Mirgon, CFRE, CLU, ChFC,
Senior Counsel, John R Frank
Consulting Group, Inc.
Assuming that the Annual Fund is
effective at maintaining a growing
pool of regular donors, your next step
is to cultivate these friends to a
point of knowing when to ask for a
major gift, for what amount, and to
which project. So how do you do this?
This one requires that you actually
go see your top- end donors in person.
I have used a technique of meeting
with these donors for the purpose of
thanking them, and learning how they
got involved with the ministry. When
you schedule the visit, you are coming
“to bring the results of your
financial support, and learn more
about how you got connected with our
program”.
Your initial visits should focus on
learning about their interests, family
life, and work experiences.
Additionally, you want to know them as
people. What they care about and why.
Once you’ve done this, it’s time to
begin planning individual cultivation
strategies for each prospect. As
development professionals, cultivation
simply means planning the steps we
will take in educating and involving
these supporters in a way that will
draw them closer to a program that
they care about very deeply. That is
why it is critical that your
relationship building process be
focused on the donor – and what they
care about.

Metro Hope Ministries -
Minneapolis, MN
Executive Director Dan Ward showed
campaign consultant John Frank through
the new Healing House facility on
March 7th. Set to receive clients in
June, 2006, it will minister to a
unique group of women and children.
Those coming out of prison, out of
prostitution, and with addictions are
usually asked to go into a program and
leave their children, reports Dan. The
Healing House program will allow women
to keep their children with them as
they complete the steps needed to get
back on their feet, defeat the
addiction, and reenter society.
New Hope Center, the mens recovery
program at Metro Hope Ministries is 80
years old. They will take the valuable
experience they have and use it to
provide hope and healing to the women
of their community
The Healing Hearts, Building Lives
Campaign raised $2 million to purchase
and renovate the former senior home.
The renovations are part gift in kind
and part professional builders. And
the community has been very supportive
Congratulations to the team at
Metro Hope Ministries and the launch
of the Healing House!
